According to Wikipedia, the Harlem Shake was invented by “Al B”, a Harlem resident, in 1981. It was first called the ‘albee’ after the man who introduced it.
Many of us now associate the term with a heavily replicated internet ‘meme’ that went viral in February of this year. Since that time, there have been thousands upon thousands of new versions posted to youtube, in which people suddenly break into a version of the dance in seemingly random settings, at seemingly random moments.
