Baker Hughes has announced a field proven and patent-pending PDC cutter with geometry optimized for highly abrasive drilling environments. Their new ‘StayCool’ cutters, when married with a standard Hughes Christensen Talon™ bit, have achieved impressive results.
It is easy to reach temperatures as high as 750°C when cutting into sandstone and hard shale. This results in more rapid oxidization and accelerated dulling of the PDC cutting edge. A dull bit generally means higher mechanical specific energy or MSE (ie. additional torque applied to the drill string to compensate for added friction). The StayCool cutter’s non-flat design reduces friction, keeping temperatures 50% lower.
After more than 289,000 feet of drilling over the course of 89 bit runs in 5 different field settings, the StayCool technology has been shown to increase rate of penetration by 10%, and increase footage drilled by 37%. The result is extended run length and thus fewer bit trips per well drilled.
